Why isn't there one universal sign language? Because sign languages developed naturally within different Deaf communities, just like spoken languages. And while language may differ, some things are universal. A smile can be understood in every language. International Sign is not a universal language. It is a communication system used to help Deaf people from different countries connect, often at international events and gatherings. It isn't designed to replace ASL, BSL, or any other sign language. Sign language isn't one language. It's a world of languages.
